After rebooting OS X VBox attaches usb devices well until you need attach usb device again several days later.I can no longer attach USB devices since upgrading to OSX 10.7.2.Previously I could happily connect my iLok dongle via virtualboxs usb.I have the sameidentical problem here with a USB smart card reader.
When I try to connect it to the guest system I get the error (sorry it is in French). USB device Gemplus USB SmartCard Reader with UUID 2097f32e-b524-40c1-b512-8c6352fcf2f0 is busy with a previous request. In my case the error is NSERRORINVALIDARG and not NSERRORCALLFAILED. Oracle Vm Virtualbox Usb Mac OS X HostOf course the device is not used on the Mac OS X host (Lion 10.7.2 but the problem was already present in 10.7.1 and maybe also 10.7.0). I guess Apple changed something in the USB layer and broke USB support in VirtualBox. Also note that I have the same problem if the guest OS Linux or WIndows. And please note that your host might have pcscd daemon running, which could potentially lock your card reader. ![]() ![]() When I say nothing. I mean changing the IDE controller from ICH6 to PIIX4. This is a major defect in my opinion I have Windows only hardware that I use that right now Im stuck with not using anything. I do not think this is a 10.7.2 specific problem. I have this problem on 10.6.8 with Linux hosts, on a Macbook Pro with built-in USB and there is no pcscd running on Mac OS. Also the problem goes away when I set CPUs to 1 instead of 2 or more. I had upgraded to 10.7.2 and at the same time bumped my machine up from 1 to 4 CPUs. I would get an indication that they were plugged in but it would always return an unrecognized device error. Changed the system back to 1 processor and USB works again Still a bug but at least it can be worked around. I am having the same general category of problems with two different USB serial port dongles, one being the hoary old PL2303 and the other being a FTDI. ![]() Seems that, in general, USB on Mac is broken right now and needs someone to look at it with a debugger to see whats going on. I am having the same issue with the latest VB 4.1.12 Ext. The problem seems to be related to the VB does not properly unloads device drivers (kexts), which makes the device occupied by OSX. Also, I dont believe this issue is guest specific, I have tested this problem is consistent on guests running Windws XP (single or multiple CPU(s)) as well as on Linux (32bit or 64bit, single or multiple CPU(s)).
